🌱 How to Grow Lavender (Facts & Tips)

Soil: Well-drained, sandy / loamy soil/ dry soil is best. Lavender does not like heavy clay or waterlogged soil.

Sunlight: Requires full sun (6+ hours)

Hardiness zone: 4-10

Sowing:
Start seeds indoors in late winter or early spring (6-8 weeks before last frost)
(tips: Northern states (eg NY,IL) start indoors in spring
Southern states (eg TX, FL) sow in fall or early spring)
Transplant only when nights temperature is over 50°F(10°C )

Soak seeds 24 hours in warm water (104°F/40°C) to boost germination
Seeds can also benefit from cold stratification for improved germination (Best choice but takes time. This involves chilling the seeds in a moist medium, like sand or a paper tower, within a refrigerator for 4-6 weeks)

Sow on the surface of moist seed-starting mix and do not cover or very lightly cover- they need light to sprout
Ensure a Suny location or use grow lights, full sun needed.
Keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging
Ideal temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C) until germination (may take 14–45 days).

Transplanting Outdoors:
Move seedlings outdoors ONLY after frost ends.
Transplant after 4-6 true leaves (6-8 weeks)
Prepare the planting area by loosening the soil to a depth of 8 inches, lavender prefers well-drained.
Incorporate sand or gravel to improve drainage.
Space plants about 12–18 inches apart for good airflow.

Watering:
Water young plants regularly until established.
Mature lavender prefers dry conditions—avoid overwatering.

Blooming:
Prune regularly to maintain compact growth (better blooms)
Plants will reward you with abundant blooms for many years.

Care:
Prune lightly after flowering to encourage bushy growth.
Lavender thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil—avoid heavy fertilizer.
